How do you crack a coconut open on a deserted island?

I know how to do it in my kitchen... but, say you got shipwrecked on a tropical island and you have no tools at your disposal, you're starving to death, and all that's around is coconut trees. How do you crack a coconut open with just what's available without spilling the milk? Is there any survival technique?

Also, how do island dwellers open their coconuts? Do they use specific tools, or do they just use what's available? How do you crack a coconut open on a deserted island?
Didn't you guys see the movie Cast Away with Tom Hanks? It's a must see for all of those planning to be marooned on a deserted island. I think you could probably beat a coconut against a rock all day and you won't get very far. First you have to remove the husk. I believe our hero used a shell or rock to cut it with the grain (top to bottom). He then just peeled the husk off (although it did require some effort). Now you're ready to crack that open with a rock and have yourself a little coconut feast.

However, let's not forget about learning how to build a fire and while we're at it we may have to work on our self-dentistry in case we're there for a long time.

In real life I've seen it done with a machete where they just slice the top off.How do you crack a coconut open on a deserted island?
he used ice skates to open the cocunut

Substitute the ice skates for a sharp rock. You're all set to go.

You can smash and cut with solid and sharp rocks. The best way to extract the milk is to puncture one of the dark round dents of the coconut, and drink the clear milk.

Really good question!

the best thing is to use a pointed rock to crack open the husk. save it, you can use it for firestarting material. then the inner seed has three dark spots. use your pointed rock, pierce, drink the ';milk';. tap around the circumference and crack to get to the coconut meat.

I dont get the question. You wouldnt be on a deserted island if it was deserted.

Hawaiians open them by hitting the coconut on a big stick, placed into the ground where it won't fall over

you can open the coconut with rock

just relax and do it like gilligan used to do it

What's this talk about this movie Castaway or whatever... Haven't you seen Gilligan's island? They not only opened the coconut but made coconut cream pies and stuff. And you can apparently make a radio out of a coconut.

Wow. YOu really paid attention to that movie. I remember Wilson... that's about it.

Why would you be starving (and have to eat coconuts) on a tropical island? Why not just make a fishing net (out of vines, like Jin does on Lost) and fish? And of course build the fire to cook it.

they have little bowling ball holes in them, poke a hole through one, drink the milk, then do what i do at home (throw it in the air then run like hell, then pick the pieces up afterwards)

lol good question! =)

you crack it open on a rock... %26amp; of course you spill some at first... but don't cry over spilled milk.. eventually after a while you develop your own technique...
hey sco who intends on being stranded on a isle.get a rock like the cavemen used to do,or a real sharp, longer rock (you got time)put the pointy end (where)and use a twisting motion. how thirsty are you?bugs are good protein.
i pretend that aint a coconut, but its the head of my ex,who cheated on me.so there should be no problem in cracking it open
I'd put it under the wheel of my car %26amp; run it over. Hope this helps.
Nature does it by dropping the coconut from the top of the tree onto rocks ..... You just have to be there right after it hits..... or climb the tree and drop the ripest one from the top of the tree onto the rocks yourself.... Just don't sit under a coconut tree.....
