Have i damaged my computer? how can it be fixed?

after manually removing my virus from my registery, whenever i want to open a program, i get the message ';this file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action. create an association in the folder options control panel.';Have i damaged my computer? how can it be fixed?
Before reformatting, try a system restore. Do one for a month previous to todays date, if it is still there roll it back 2 months. This will only work if you haven't deleted any of your older restore points. Go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore

The worst thing that will happen with a system restore, is you might have to reinstall some of the drivers and windows updates that occured along the time frame you backed up past during restore... Windows will take care of any updates, and you can check your drivers for your graphics card and sound card yourself after you get it done...

I have removed virus this way on different computers several times. Though there are some virus out there that cannot be deleted this way...Have i damaged my computer? how can it be fixed?
I have fixed a friends computer which did the same thing and what i did was make a new user account and delete the old, now it works a treat, it might be worth you trying it.

Or: reformat and start again
Are you trying to open a program - like Word - by clicking on the program icon. Or are you clicking on a file that you created using that program and that you'd expect to open it for you - for example a letter you wrote in Word?

If it's the first option you'll probably have re-install the program giving you the problems.

If it's the second option you can probably fix it by right clicking on the file and choosing 'Open with...'. This will allow you to select the program to use and there should be a check box to say 'always use this program for files of this type' (or something similar) which you can turn on. That will restore the association.

Finally - learn from this that messing in the registry is a dangerous thing. Only do it if you're 100% certain you know what you're doing and always be prepared for things to go wrong. Backup!
recover ur pc from safe mode
is your comp:old new what system are you running, you have,nt damaged your comp iv had this message several times, save your files b/up and reformat, sure you will get a answer from some comp geek.
Had the same problem the other day and I did a system restore ,found this was the easiest method.Worked a treat . I hate blasted viruses.
Download a registry fix called exefix.reg.Import it to registry and it should solve the opening program. Then install a good antivirus like avira, avg or avast to avoid this happening again.
There is not enough info to answer your question. What OS are you using and this happens with all programs not just one or two?

If you are using Windows XP or newer then you can easily do a system restore and get your system back the way it was. Make sure you go to a point before the virus infected your machine. In the future before you modify the registry make sure you create a new system restore point and create a backup reg file.
reformat
